If you’re into computing, one of the things you’ve probably heard about is virtualization, where you run one operating system within another using virtualization software such as VirtualBox or VMware Workstation. While there are some great benefits to this technology, it also has its downsides and can be quite difficult to set up correctly. But if you’re an IT pro, then Microsoft’s own implementation of virtualization is right up your alley. It’s called Windows Sandbox and here are 5 reasons why you should use it in your day-to-day workflows.
Windows Sandbox is a component of Microsoft’s upcoming feature update, Windows 10 version 1809. Even though it’s not part of Microsoft’s official feature list, it was demoed onstage at Microsoft’s WinHEC event earlier in August 2018. And as promised, it will be a free upgrade available later in September. So what exactly is it? A sandbox is just a secure space where untested programs can run without damaging anything else on your computer.
For example, whenever you download and install an app from outside of your web browser (say Google Chrome or Firefox), those apps are placed into isolated sandboxes with limited permissions. This ensures that they don’t have access to other parts of your system, including other files and folders. When you use Windows Sandbox, it creates a new virtualized environment for running untrusted applications—in other words, any program that could potentially contain malware.
It’s essentially like installing another operating system inside of your current one. This means that if something does go wrong with an application inside of Windows Sandbox—or if something malicious manages to sneak past its defences—it won’t infect any data on your main hard drive or damage anything else installed on your PC. And since everything is contained within its own environment, removing malicious software from Windows Sandbox should be easy too.
Creating a sandbox in Windows 10 allows you to run an app or process in a restricted environment, limiting its access and resources. The benefits of doing so are extensive; it’s one of Microsoft’s most useful new features with their latest operating system, especially for developers. Kernel-mode sandboxes allow users to test untrusted applications without compromising security because they have no direct access to hardware components like network cards or USB ports. User mode sandboxes provide more flexibility but have less security protection than kernel-mode ones do because they allow applications more control over your computer’s hardware components.
One of the reasons why you should use Windows sandbox is that it allows you to run almost any program on your computer without causing damage or compromising your system. Some programs may still cause crashes, but they will not be able to harm your computer. The windows sandbox is designed with a high level of protection and automatically stops any malicious code or bugs before they can wreak havoc on your machine. This makes running an executable in a virtual space safe and easy.
You can even test new software in a sandbox environment first and then try it out on your real system if you want. It’s compatible with all Microsoft products including word, office, PowerPoint, and outlook among others.
A sandbox is essentially a virtual machine, but it’s less flexible. You can only run one application at a time (at least without some extra effort), which means you have one program’s security flaws instead of potentially dozens on your main computer. But sandboxes also give you much finer control over what apps can and can’t do—on a Mac, for example, when an app is installed from a disk image that contains malware, it won’t warn you that it was downloaded from outside Apple’s App Store.
A sandbox will prevent that problem. For general computing use, such as writing articles or streaming Netflix shows, sandboxes are overkill; but for sensitive tasks like online banking or shopping and handling confidential data in general?

If you don’t use Windows, why not? Most versions of Linux (for example) come with a free virtual machine. In most cases, you can set up an Ubuntu server in minutes and be up and running. The operating system is installed from scratch; there are no viruses or spyware to worry about. If your employer offers a cloud computing solution, chances are it’s based on Linux. Although many people feel that using Unix for day-to-day work is archaic at best and impossible at worst, learning to navigate just a few simple commands—even if you never type them after your first week—is invaluable when using other tools (such as GitHub).
It also looks really impressive on your resume! What more could you ask for? Okay, fine: Linux servers are also much cheaper than their Windows counterparts. Many hosting companies will offer discounts on any VPS over five gigabytes, meaning your initial investment will be much lower than a traditional server. Furthermore, since there’s less bloat on these machines, they require fewer resources to run efficiently. This means you pay less each month and have more room to grow in case things start taking off faster than expected!
