These are the top 10 sites to sell your pictures and make money as a photographer.

If you love taking pictures, then you might be considering selling your photographs to make some extra money. It’s not the most lucrative career option around, but if you love taking photos, and are good at it, you can earn some extra cash. This list of 10 sites where you can sell your pictures will help guide you through the process of finding someone who wants to buy what you’re selling.

The top 10 sites to sell your pictures and make money as a photographer

1) Stocksy

Photographers (amateur and professional) can sell their images on Stocksy, which pays photographers 50% of its sales. Note that you’ll need an invite from someone already on Stocksy in order to join. You’ll need at least three photos, one editorial shot, two landscape shots and two lifestyle shots. Photographers get 15% off for every download of a photo purchased through Stocksy.

Pricing ranges from $19-$299 per month, with subscription plans costing more than individual downloads. Payments are made twice per month by PayPal or check (you can choose). [Full Disclosure: This is an affiliate link, so I’ll earn a commission if you subscribe.]

2) Thinkstock

It is free to join, and it has little traffic, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be used. It is good for photographers who just want to share their work with friends and family. You can upload only two images per day. The downside of Thinkstock is that they take 50% of sales, so if you are trying to sell any of your photographs then think again! There are plenty of other websites out there which offer better rates than Thinkstock. This site is not really recommended.

Do you have a photo that someone wants to buy? If yes, then selling photos online could be an excellent way to earn some extra cash or even launch a new career. You can sell stock photos or sell prints online via popular websites like ShutterStock or iStockPhoto (more on these below). Selling photos online is also quite simple – once you’ve created an account with one of these sites, uploading your photo is easy and quick. From there, it’s simply about marketing yourself; remember: potential buyers don’t know who you are until they’ve seen your photos!

3) Envato market

Envato Market is one of the largest marketplaces on earth. It is a marketplace for graphic design, website templates, scripts, plugins and other digital products that you can sell. With more than 2 million members and 500,000 digital products in their gallery, it’s easy to see why the Envato market could be right for you.

A great part about selling on Envato Market is they take care of all customer support after purchase, so you don’t have to do anything but get paid. The best part is it’s free to join and they offer multiple payment options, including PayPal, bank transfer, or check (if you live outside of Australia).

If you sell $20 or more per month, there are no listing fees at all! For example: if I wanted to sell a picture I took of Sydney Harbour Bridge at night time with boats lit up around it I would just upload my photo along with a description saying where I took it from (for example North Head) and how long it took me to shoot. From there I would add tags like night photography Sydney harbour bridge photography cityscape photography and other related tags that might interest someone looking for similar photos.

4) iStockphoto

iStockphoto (owned by Getty Images) has been around for years, but it’s still one of the best options if you want to sell photos. Contributors receive 50 percent of the net selling price on all sales, and licensing rights can be extended perpetually. All images must be 600×800 pixels or larger; files must be in JPG or TIFF format with no more than 12 megabytes total.

5) Shutterstock

The most well-known stock photography site, Shutterstock has a membership program that’s free if you post 20 images (or video clips) or more each month. If you’re just looking for extra income, go with their free plan. However, if you’re looking to add professional stock photography of all types (including audio) to your business, upgrade your account and pay $79 per month.

You can also sell videos on Shutterstock if they have high enough quality and are in one of their approved categories. The best part? Shutterstock only takes a 15% cut from sales, which is standard across the industry. If you make great content, there’s no reason not to be selling it here!

6) Foap

Foap is a photo-sharing site where you can sell the rights to use any of your photos. Foap has a slick, intuitive app, so it’s very easy for users to upload content. Plus, they pay photographers by offering Foap points that can be converted into cash. (Pay is $0.25 per Foap point.) The downside? You have to have one million Foap points before you can cash out via PayPal—but if you’re uploading lots of great content every day, that shouldn’t be hard at all!

(Pro tip: If you think about photography as an investment in marketing for your business, it won’t be nearly as painful!) To get started with Foap, download their iPhone or Android app and start snapping away. Each time you snap a pic using Foap, they’ll give you some credits which can then be redeemed for cash once you hit 1 million points. Don’t miss out on these extra tips to help grow your Instagram following even faster! (Bonus: Download their app today—it works for both iPhone and Android devices!)

7) Fotolia

Create an account with Fotolia, which is a good place to start because you can set your own pricing for photos. However, Fotolia takes 45 percent of any sale you make from their site. Not bad, but not great either. The good news is that it’s very easy to list photos on Fotolia, and they have millions of registered users looking for images. You may be able to sell some or all of your images here. Plus, they offer a revenue-sharing program that lets you earn royalties based on how much traffic your images get (and sales).

It’s hard to say how much money you’ll actually make using Fotolia, though. Their website doesn’t provide much information about how their payout structure works and there are no customer reviews or testimonials available online. It looks like photographers who want to maximize earnings will need to apply directly for consideration through their Partner Program.

8) 500px Marketplace

This is an easy-to-use marketplace for selling photos. With over 1 million contributing photographers and 85,000 buyers, you are sure to find someone interested in purchasing one of your photos. Commissions start at 40% if you sell at least four images per month. They take a 30% commission if you don’t meet that threshold. Sellers retain the copyright of their images unless otherwise agreed upon by both parties. There is no cost to join 500px Marketplace.

The site does not allow pornographic or offensive content. Sellers must be 18 years old or older. 500px Marketplace supports PayPal and Stripe payments only. The website is available in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish languages.

9) Flicker Pro

Flicker offers three subscription packages for its Pro account. There is an economy package for $24.99, a standard package for $59.99, and a premium package for $139.99. The economy package allows you to upload 500 photos per month, while the standard package allows you to upload 5000 photos per month. The premium plan gives you unlimited storage space and no ads on your photos.

10) Canva

Easily create graphic designs. If you have designs that you want to sell, Canva is one of those sites where you can quickly create marketing materials like infographics, ad campaigns, business cards, posters, and more with just a few clicks. It’s also user-friendly enough for people who aren’t designers but still want an easy way to create professional-looking content without hiring someone else to do it for them.
