Sergio Ramos of Real Madrid charged for earning yellow card on purpose
UEFA has accused Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos for earning a yellow card on purpose during the Champions League encounter against Ajax in order to serve a suspension before the quarter-finals.
Defender Ramos was booked in the 89th minute of Madrid’s 2-1 win in Amsterdam on February 13, meaning he would miss the second leg of the last-16 clash at the Bernabeu.
Ramos was cited shortly after the game as stating he “would be lying” if he denied purposely getting the booking.
Ramos, on the other hand, then used social media to emphasize that collecting a caution was not deliberate, instead of alluding to purposely handing away a free-kick to prevent an Ajax equalizer.
UEFA initiated a disciplinary inquiry and stated Ramos had been charged under Article 15 on Tuesday evening.
If Ramos is convicted when the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body hear the case on 28 February, he may face a long ban.
Valencia player Geoffrey Kondogbia was recently issued a two-match suspension by UEFA after being found to have gotten a warning on purpose during the Europa League victory against Celtic.
Ramos also denied any misconduct in an interview with the Spanish daily Marca.
“I’m taken aback by everything. I was referring to forcing the foul, which was unavoidable. “I’m not going to force the booking,” the Real Madrid captain stated.
When asked if he knew the infraction would result in a yellow card and a ban, he replied, “Yes, but I had no option.”
“It was a really dangerous counter-attack in the 88th minute, with the match open and the tie also on the line.
“That’s why I stated I’d lie if I said I didn’t know I was carrying a penalty, just as I knew I had no option but to make a mistake. That is what I meant when I stated that in football, you have to make difficult decisions.”
“If I had intended to force a penalty, I could have done it in the group stage, against Roma, because we were already leading in the group and the last game, against CSKA, was inconsequential,” Ramos explained. A match, by the way, in which I did not participate.”
