One of Qualcomm’s most daring announcements at this year’s Snapdragon Summit goes beyond the gaming phone: a portable gaming system built in collaboration with Razer and dubbed (for now) the Snapdragon G3x Handheld Developer Kit.

Qualcomm claims that “this platform is meant to be the PC gaming rig of mobile games.”

This gadget will not be primarily offered to customers, as the name suggests. It will be sold as a developer’s kit at retail, with Qualcomm expecting that other manufacturers would adopt its new G3x gaming platform. According to Qualcomm’s Alex Katouzian, versions of the platform will be released in 2022 under Razer and maybe other brands.

Qualcomm Senior Director of Product Management Micah Knapp says, “For now, we’ve built the Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 Gaming Platform—the chipset—and the Snapdragon G3x Handheld Developer Kit so that developers can explore its capabilities and take full advantage of the controllers, massive thermal headroom, and large, high frame rate screen.”

The G3x HDK is a black handheld with a 6,000mAh battery and a 120Hz OLED screen. It contains analogue sticks on both sides of the screen, as well as a gamepad and action buttons; the controller is built up to be Xbox-compatible especially. A USB-C connector can connect to 4K TVs or AR glasses, and a 1080p built-in webcam allows you to broadcast while playing.


The Snapdragon 888 in the G3x Gen 1 looks to be overclocked. While Qualcomm is withholding technical information on the chip’s cores and speeds—an odd choice for a gaming product—I’ve learned that the primary cores are ARM Cortex-X1 with a clock speed high enough to necessitate the use of a fan. The amount of main X1 cores might determine whether its speeds are in the middle of the current 888+ and the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, or whether it’s faster than the 8 Gen 1 but hotter.


While the G3x Gen 1 seems to include a Qualcomm Kyro CPU, Adreno GPU, and 5G Modem-RF system, the spec sheet does not list any part numbers or speeds.

Thermals appear to be one of the reasons it isn’t a straight-up Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Because the G3x architecture allows for, and perhaps even anticipates, a fan, it might offer better performance than a CPU built for a thin, silent smartphone.

Qualcomm has a bad track record when it comes to hardware, and Android gaming handhelds have a bad track record when it comes to gamers. Qualcomm offers counter-arguments to both: the hardware was built in collaboration with Razer, which has a stronger gaming reputation than Qualcomm, and it’s designed in part for game streaming, so you don’t have to use it to play Android games.

One of the biggest disadvantages of the G3x, at least in the United States, is that it runs Android. The majority of the gaming community in the United States despises Android, even when it comes to mobile gaming, where the iPhone is the preferred platform.
