Lionel Messi knee injury gives PSG concern

Lionel Messi has given Paris Saint-Germain an untimely injury headache, with the Ligue 1 giants revealing that the Argentine forward has had a knee scan.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner was surprisingly withdrawn from his most recent appearance against Lyon, leaving Mauricio Pochettino with plenty of questions about why the all-time great was withdrawn.

There were reports at the time that the 34-year-old Argentine had suffered a minor injury, which PSG has now confirmed ahead of their midweek game against Metz.

“Lionel Messi, who took a knock to his left knee against Lyon, underwent an MRI on Tuesday morning, which confirmed signs of bruising of the bone,” PSG said in a fitness update on the club’s official website.

“A follow-up exam will be performed in 48 hours.”

Messi will not play against Metz on Wednesday because he is now resting to avoid additional injury.

Over the summer, a surprise transaction brought the South American superstar to Parc des Princes from Barcelona, where his contract at Camp Nou was about to expire.

Alot were expected of him in France, especially given that he would be reunited with former Blaugrana teammate Neymar and World Cup champion Kylian Mbappe.

They have yet to fire as a trio, however, and Messi’s progress in Paris remains stalled.

With only 24 minutes of game time before the September international break, he was eased into the PSG fold on the strength of Argentina’s Copa America-winning heroics.

Messi now has 166 goals to his name from Champions League and Ligue 1 appearances, and he is still waiting for his first goal for new club Barcelona.

Pochettino’s team battled to a 2-1 win over Lyon last time out, and he will alter his pack against Metz.

Marco Verratti is making his way back into contention following a knee injury that has forced the Euro 2020 champion to miss four games.

The Italian midfielder is back in training, but Ismael Ghabri is still working on his own.

Spanish centre-back Sergio Ramos, who has yet to make his PSG debut, is another player who is working separate from the main group as the 35-year-old tries to shake off a nagging calf issue.
