Amazon picks California town as first to receive drone deliveries

Customers in Lockeford, California will be among the first to get drone deliveries later this year, according to Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O).

This would be the first time Amazon conducts public drone deliveries, and it comes after multiple pilots and mission-specific initiatives from corporations including Walmart Inc (WMT.N), United Parcel Service Inc (UPS.N), and FedEx Corp (FDX.N).

The online shop stated that it was in the process of obtaining approvals from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and local officials.

The drones will be able to fly beyond line of sight (BLOS) and will be programmed to deliver packages to customers’ backyards in Lockeford, which has a population of around 4,000 people.

Amazon completed its first drone delivery to a client in the United Kingdom in 2016 and has been touting its drone delivery intentions for years.
